A new era has begun for the New England Patriots. Over the past five years, the team has moved on from Tom Brady, Bill Belichick, and Jared Mayo. Now, they are building around their second first-round quarterback in that span—one of the biggest reasons behind their new head coach’s arrival.
Speaking on the Don’t @ Me with Dan Dakich podcast, Mike Vrabel shared his excitement about working with Drake Maye, emphasizing how eager he is to shape the offense around the 22-year-old. *“I see a young, athletic, talented, full-of-potential player,” Vrabel said. “[I’m] excited to build this team around [him] and a large part of the reason why I wanted to be here.”*
Vrabel highlighted Maye’s ability to throw both from the pocket and off-platform while also knowing when to scramble. In his rookie season, Maye recorded 15 touchdown passes, two rushing scores, and 10 interceptions over 13 games. He started as a backup but took over as the starter midway through the season, finishing with a 58.6 QBR and earning a Pro Bowl nod.
After a year away from coaching following his departure from the Tennessee Titans in 2023, Vrabel is now tasked with reviving a struggling Patriots team that finished 4-13 last season. The former Patriots linebacker has already made an impact in free agency, securing key additions like wide receiver Stefon Diggs, defensive tackle Milton Williams, and cornerback Carlton Davis III. With the No. 4 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, New England has a prime opportunity to further strengthen its roster.
