“We never compete in pickleball—we’d rather play as teammates,” Graf tells PEOPLE.
Pickleball has taken over for tennis legends Steffi Graf and Andre Agassi.
The Hall of Fame couple now plays pickleball at least three times a week, a passion that started during the pandemic and has only grown.
“We love that pickleball is a community-driven sport,” Agassi told PEOPLE at The Breakers Palm Beach during a “Grand Slam Weekend.” The event celebrated the resort’s new $12 million racquet sports complex, featuring tennis, pickleball, and padel courts.
Agassi noted that the sport is attracting a younger crowd, as players improve quickly and find it easy to pick up.
For Graf and Agassi, pickleball offers a new challenge with a lower risk of injury than tennis. “Andre still plays tennis, but I don’t much anymore,” Graf shared. “We loved learning something new and meeting new friends through pickleball.”
However, they have one rule—never play against each other. “We prefer to be on the same side of the court,” Graf said.
In February, the duo won the Pickleball Slam, one of the sport’s top events on ESPN. Now, they’re focused on promoting the game worldwide. Their next stop? Vietnam and China, where they’ll introduce more players to the sport.
Beyond pickleball, the couple enjoys hosting barbecues at their Las Vegas home with their kids, Jaden, 23, and Jaz, 21, as well as nearby family. “We love to entertain casually and enjoy grilling and smoking food,” Graf said.
Both remain active in philanthropy—Graf’s foundation supports traumatized children in Germany, while Agassi’s focuses on transforming public education, including his K-12 charter school in Las Vegas.
Agassi is also stepping into a new tennis role, becoming the Laver Cup’s Team World Captain this fall.
During their stay at The Breakers, the couple competed in a Hall of Fame Exhibition match against Andy Roddick and Kim Clijsters. Though they lost 10-7, Graf was impressed with the hotel’s pristine grass court.
The event benefited First Serve USA, a charity dedicated to empowering youth through education and mentorship.
