“Had about 10 pints!” – Ed Sheeran admits he was drunk during awkward clash with Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim after Ipswich draw.

Ipswich minority stakeholder Ed Sheeran blames his awkward stand-off with Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim on “10 pints.”

Singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran, who owns a 1.4% stake in Ipswich Town, has been a lifelong fan since his family moved to Suffolk. He also serves as the club’s front-of-shirt sponsor and enjoys VIP treatment at Portman Road.

Sheeran often makes the most of his hospitality suite during Premier League games, sometimes a little too much. After Ipswich’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United—Ruben Amorim’s debut as United boss—Sheeran accidentally interrupted Sky Sports’ post-match interview with the Portuguese coach while under the influence.

Speaking on the Men In Blazers podcast, Sheeran admitted his alcohol-filled VIP suite was to blame. “I had it gutted and turned into a pub, so you don’t need to go anywhere else for pre-drinks. And it’s definitely got me in trouble sometimes,” he said.

Recalling the incident, he added: “I didn’t realize Amorim was being interviewed. Jamie [Redknapp] told me to see him after the game, and as I was walking out, I spotted Jamie and thought, ‘Oh, I’ll go say hi.’ I’d had about 10 pints—clearly the wrong time. I’ve learned my lesson; it won’t happen again.”

Sheeran has also called for more creative chants from rival fans. “The chants haven’t been funny enough. I need better ones when we go away,” he joked. “I see so much effort put into rude chants, but mine lack humor. At Wolves, they just chanted ‘Ed Sheeran’s a c***,’ but at Spurs, they’ve got ‘Gimme, Gimme, Gimme a ginger from Sweden’ for Kulusevski—that’s creative! I want fans putting effort into ripping me apart.”

Ipswich faces a crucial stretch in their fight for Premier League survival. After the international break, they take on Bournemouth on April 2, with just nine games left to escape the relegation zone.
