Report: NY Jets likely to cut another veteran player soon

Zuerlein has likely taken his last snap with the Jets.

The New York Jets are focused on rebuilding their offense while maintaining their strong defense, but they can’t overlook special teams.

A key part of that is the kicker position, often the deciding factor in close games. Greg Zuerlein has been a dependable kicker for over a decade, spending the last three seasons with the Jets. He had a solid 2022, an exceptional 2023, but struggled with injuries in a frustrating 2024 campaign. According to ESPN’s Jets insider Rich Cimini, that may mark the end of his time in New York.

Jets Likely Moving on from Zuerlein
Cimini mentioned on his *Flight Deck* podcast that while it’s not official, he expects Zuerlein to be cut within the next six weeks.

“I think they’re probably going to cut him after June 1… You’re only allowed two June 1 designations before that date, and they used them on Aaron Rodgers and C.J. Mosley. So now they literally have to wait until June 1 to cut him and spread the cap hit over two years,” Cimini explained.

Given Zuerlein’s injury-plagued 2024—where he played just eight games and made only 60% of his field goals—moving on makes sense. He struggled from long range, converting just one of five attempts from 40+ yards.

Jets Exploring Kicking Options
The Jets signed Anders Carlson to a futures deal in January. Carlson joined midseason from San Francisco and impressed by making 8-of-10 field goals, including 4-of-6 from 40 yards or more. Training camp will determine if he’s the answer moving forward.

Additionally, former Detroit Lions kicker Michael Badgley was recently brought in for a workout. His past connection with Jets defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn could give him an edge in the competition.

While neither option is proven, the Jets appear ready to move on if they believe Zuerlein’s best days are behind him.

End of the Road?
Zuerlein’s Jets tenure included a stellar 2023 campaign, where he made over 90% of his field goals, including 5-of-6 from beyond 50 yards. But his struggles last season make it unlikely he’ll return in 2025.

If this is the end, the Jets will have another key position battle to monitor as they finalize their roster.
