Miami heads to North Carolina for a three-game series after suffering an 11-2 home loss to Stetson on Wednesday night. The Hurricanes enter the weekend at 14-12 overall and 1-5 in the ACC, while North Carolina stands at 19-6 and 4-5 in conference play. The Tar Heels have won three of their last four games.
Defensive struggles plagued Miami against Stetson, committing five errors, including three in the fourth inning, which led to five Hatters runs and an 8-0 deficit. Starting pitcher Reese Lumpkin lasted three innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on two hits, two walks, and five strikeouts. The bullpen didn’t fare much better, surrendering five more runs (three earned).
Stetson broke the game open in the third with an RBI double from Isaiah Barkett, followed by two more runs. The Hatters capitalized on Miami’s defensive miscues in the fourth, scoring twice on errors. Their top four hitters combined for seven hits, two runs, and six RBIs.
Six Stetson pitchers combined to limit Miami to just eight hits. The Hurricanes’ only runs came from a solo home run by Derek Williams in the fifth and an RBI single by Bobby Marsh in the seventh. Stetson has now won two of its last three matchups against Miami dating back to 2022.
Despite being tied for 10th in the ACC with Virginia Tech, North Carolina ranks eighth nationally in RPI. The Tar Heels boast a strong pitching staff, ranking second in the ACC with a 3.62 ERA. Miami, on the other hand, is 15th in batting average (.273) and has a 5.80 ERA.
