Harvey Barnes reveals Newcastle’s player summit to set season goals

The £38m star revealed how Newcastle players met after the break to set their key goal for the final 10 games.

Harvey Barnes has revealed that Newcastle United players held a private meeting after their Carabao Cup triumph to refocus on their goals for the remainder of the season.

The forward explained that while the squad enjoyed their celebrations, senior players emphasized the importance of staying committed to their main target—securing Champions League qualification. After competing in Europe last season but missing out on continental football this year, Barnes understands the significance of returning to the elite stage.

“We’ve had this massive high, and we should be enjoying it—we are. But with 10 games to go, we want to push ourselves as high as possible in the Premier League. The Champions League remains our goal this year. After the celebrations, we’ve refocused and are ready to go again.”

Newcastle return to Premier League action with a home game against Brentford on Wednesday, and Barnes believes the team must channel their Carabao Cup momentum into the final stretch of the season.

“We take all the positives from it. Everyone is on a high, and hopefully, we can use that to our advantage against Brentford. With 10 games left, we can’t afford to lose focus. We need to get back to winning ways.”

The squad officially moved on from celebrations after parading the Carabao Cup in front of 300,000 fans. Reflecting on the experience, Barnes shared his appreciation for the club’s connection with the supporters.

“Being out there, seeing all the people, you realize what we’ve achieved and what it means to the city—it’s everything. On the bus and on stage, you could feel the passion of the fans. That moment made it all real.”

Barnes, now back in the starting lineup, has stepped up in Anthony Gordon’s absence following his suspension.

“It hasn’t been a smooth journey, but you have to be ready when opportunities come. I hadn’t started a game in three and a half months, then suddenly, I was in against West Ham and playing in a cup final. If you’re not prepared, you let yourself and the team down. That’s always been my mindset—to be ready and do myself justice.”
