Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson has shared the squad’s collective ambition for the remainder of the Championship season after reaching a personal career milestone during the weekend’s victory. The Black Cats secured a hard-fought 1-0 win against West Brom at The Hawthorns, thanks to a stunning free kick from Trai Hume. Patterson played a key role in preserving that narrow lead, stepping up with several vital saves to fend off West Brom’s push for an equaliser. The team’s defensive efforts were also commended by former Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray, who acknowledged the resolute performance that led to the clean sheet.
Following the match, Patterson took a moment to express his appreciation for Mowbray, under whom he was a regular starter throughout a 65-game managerial spell. The Academy of Light graduate not only celebrated the three points but also reached a significant personal milestone—his 50th clean sheet for Sunderland. Patterson, however, was quick to emphasize that the achievement was the result of a united team effort. He stressed the importance of carrying the momentum through the rest of the season, noting that clean sheets are a point of pride for him but are only possible due to the collective defensive commitment.
He was full of praise for his backline, singling out Alan Browne for his strong performance at right back and highlighting the consistent quality of Trai Hume. He also commended centre-backs Luke O’Nien and Chris Mepham for their bravery and commitment in protecting the goal. According to Patterson, having defenders willing to throw themselves in front of shots makes his job much easier as a goalkeeper.
Earlier in the season, Patterson’s form was under scrutiny, with notable errors—such as one in a defeat to Hull—drawing criticism from fans and even head coach Regis Le Bris. A costly mistake against Cardiff also drew attention, raising questions about his place in the starting lineup. However, the 24-year-old appears to have regained his confidence and form since the international break, keeping two consecutive clean sheets and making several decisive stops.
Looking ahead to Sunderland’s next fixture against Norwich City, Patterson expressed excitement about the challenge, viewing it as an opportunity to showcase the team’s capabilities. He noted the significance of the game and expressed hope that Sunderland could secure another crucial victory on the road.
