Crystal Palace is set to rival Everton for the signing of 22-year-old German midfielder Merlin Rohl from SC Freiburg during the summer transfer window.
Crystal Palace is reportedly eyeing 22-year-old German midfielder Merlin Rohl, who currently plays for SC Freiburg, as they look to strengthen their midfield ahead of the summer transfer window. The Bundesliga club is said to be seeking around €25 million for the promising young talent. However, Crystal Palace will face competition from Everton, who are also interested in securing his services.
Who is Merlin Rohl?
Merlin Rohl has emerged as one of the top young prospects in the Bundesliga since joining SC Freiburg from FC Ingolstadt 04 in August 2022. Hailing from Berlin, Rohl began his youth career at SV Babelsberg 03 before making the move to Ingolstadt. Over the past three years, he has solidified his position as a key player in midfield for Freiburg. Despite dealing with injuries this season, limiting him to under 1,000 minutes in 17 appearances, Rohl’s potential has caught the attention of several European clubs.
Premier League move on the horizon?
Everton’s interest in Rohl makes sense, as the club is actively looking for a midfielder due to the aging Idrissa Gueye and the expected departure of Abdoulaye Doucoure after the 2024/25 season. Rohl could be an ideal addition to their midfield. Crystal Palace, on the other hand, has also shown interest, with Cheick Doucoure battling fitness issues and Adam Wharton linked with a move away from the club. Rohl presents a viable option for Palace as they seek to bolster their squad.
With SC Freiburg willing to part with Rohl for a reasonable fee of €25 million, it remains to be seen whether the young midfielder will make a move to the Premier League this summer.
