Snarling Ex-Owl Returns: Sheffield Wednesday on Edge Over Familiar but Ferocious Threat

Sheffield Wednesday are set to host struggling Oxford United at Hillsborough this afternoon, with fans likely to recognize a familiar figure at the center of the visitors’ midfield. The Owls are eager to secure their first home victory in the Championship since New Year’s Day, and while they no longer face the end-of-season pressure of past campaigns, they still have much to prove. Oxford, on the other hand, remain in a battle for survival and are desperate to defy expectations, having managed just 10 points away from home all season.

Oxford’s fortunes have shifted somewhat since Gary Rowett took over as manager in December. His more pragmatic approach stands in contrast to the style employed by his predecessor, Des Buckingham, and while it has helped steer the U’s away from an immediate return to League One, results have been mixed—especially against Wednesday. This afternoon, the Owls are expected to dominate possession, though controlling games hasn’t always translated into positive outcomes for them this season.

Ahead of the clash, Wednesday boss Danny Röhl shared his perspective on the challenge ahead. He acknowledged Oxford’s recent inconsistency but praised their organization and adaptability, noting their ability to switch between a back four or five. Röhl highlighted their reliance on set-pieces—particularly long throw-ins from former Owl Will Vaulks—and their preference for direct play, pointing out they lead the division in long balls.

Despite Oxford’s threats, Röhl emphasized that the focus would be on his own players and their performance. He called for full control of the match over 90 minutes, expecting his team to dictate tempo, recover second balls, and bring intensity and discipline to the pitch. He believes that if Wednesday execute the basics well, their quality will shine through.

Vaulks, now a key player for Oxford, remains well-known among Wednesday supporters. A fan favorite, the Welsh international was the club’s player of the season during their dramatic survival push last year. Röhl acknowledged the impact Vaulks continues to have, particularly since Rowett’s arrival, and expects the midfielder to bring passion and fire to the contest.

“He’s been doing a strong job for them,” Röhl remarked. “Since the managerial change, he’s been a regular starter and has made a clear impact. He knows what a relegation battle feels like, and he’ll bring that fight. But we’ll focus on our task. After the match, we’ll see who comes out on top.” Röhl also reflected on their previous meeting with Oxford, which he felt was a clinical, well-controlled performance by his side. He’s determined to see them repeat that display today.
