Mark Robins addressed the media ahead of Stoke City’s crucial match against Cardiff City, two teams currently fighting to avoid relegation. With only five Championship matches left in the season, this game has the potential to be a defining moment for both sides. As a classic “six-pointer,” this match could determine the fate of the teams involved. Cardiff currently sit in 22nd place, just inside the relegation zone on goal difference, while Stoke are only two points above them in 20th. A defeat for either side could see them sink further into the relegation battle, putting their survival chances at risk.
Although Stoke suffered a late equalizer to relegation rivals Luton Town earlier in the week, Robins remains optimistic about his team’s chances ahead of the Cardiff match. Stoke have been unbeaten since the Championship resumed after the international break, securing a win over QPR and drawing against both Preston North End and Luton. Robins highlighted the importance of these performances, noting, “Those performances are the things that start to pick up points and we’ve done that, we’re three unbeaten now and there’s a positive there.” Staying positive is crucial for Stoke’s survival, especially as the team looks to navigate the final stretch of the season.
The late goal conceded against Luton could have been a morale blow, but Robins did not view it as a disaster. He remains upbeat and focused on the upcoming challenges. “For us it’s all to play for,” Robins said. “Football keeps giving you opportunities until the games run out. We’ve got a lot to play for and it makes you feel alive. We’ve got all these things going on and it’s where we find ourselves. We’ve got to deal with the situation as best we can.” Stoke’s survival hopes hinge on maintaining a positive mindset and picking up crucial points in their remaining fixtures.
Robins expressed confidence in his team’s ability to compete, noting that performance levels have been strong and there’s no reason why this shouldn’t continue over the next five games. Stoke’s injury woes have been a significant challenge throughout the season, with key players like Sam Gallagher and Ben Pearson having missed long stretches. However, heading into the final stretch, the squad is in better shape. Robins revealed that Josh Wilson-Esbrand is close to being available for selection, and Enda Stevens could return before the end of the season. “The fact we’ve got players available and fit is a must, really, in this period,” Robins said.
Despite recent struggles, Stoke fans have remained steadfast in their support. Over 1,600 supporters will make the 300-mile round trip to Cardiff, and Robins was quick to acknowledge their importance. “They’ve been vocal in a really positive way,” he said. “That makes a huge difference.” With the fans behind them, Robins and his players will be hoping they can pick up the vital points needed to secure their Championship status.
