Give him the money!
The new New York Jets leadership, led by general manager Darren Mougey and head coach Aaron Glenn, has had to make significant decisions this offseason, including evaluating their quarterback and reshaping the roster. However, one decision should be clear and easy: what to do with Sauce Gardner.
Gardner, who was drafted fourth overall in 2022, is expected to become the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history in the near future. Since joining the Jets, he has proven to be a cornerstone player, excelling both on and off the field. Despite his success, Gardner remains without a new deal as the Jets began their offseason program. While some players might stay home in his situation, Gardner showed up to work, demonstrating his leadership and commitment to the team.
As an All-Pro cornerback, Gardner’s performance since entering the league has been exceptional. He earned first-team All-Pro honors in each of his first two seasons and, despite a slight dip in performance in 2024, still allowed the fewest catches of any qualified cornerback. His value remains high, and he is expected to be compensated accordingly. The Jets have indicated they plan to continue extension talks with Gardner after the 2025 NFL Draft.
Unlike some players who sit out voluntary workouts during contract negotiations, Gardner is actively participating, setting the tone for his teammates. He has shown that he wants to be in New York long-term, avoiding drama and making his intentions clear by simply showing up. Now, the ball is in the Jets’ court to reward him for his efforts and secure his future with the team.
