The Jets wouldn’t actually go through with this… would they?
The New York Jets have been linked to a wide range of first-round prospects ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft. From top offensive linemen like Armand Membou and Will Campbell to standout pass catchers like Tyler Warren and Tetairoa McMillan, mock drafts have explored all the logical paths the team might take with the No. 7 pick. However, with multiple roster needs still unaddressed, a surprise pick remains a real possibility.
One unexpected name now surfacing is Texas cornerback Jahdae Barron. According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, Barron could be a potential “curveball” if the Jets decide to trade down. While No. 7 may be too high for him, the connection between Barron and New York is raising eyebrows.
Barron, a three-year starter at Texas, is known for his versatility and experience. He played 57 games across five seasons and capped off his college career by winning the 2024 Jim Thorpe Award as the nation’s top defensive back. In 2024, he recorded five interceptions and 16 passes defended, earning a 90.7 PFF grade.
Though not ideally sized at 5’11”, 194 lbs, Barron’s high football IQ and ability to play multiple roles — including outside corner, nickel, and safety — make him intriguing. He shifted to a full-time outside corner role in 2024 and delivered his best season yet. Still, some teams project him as more of a nickel back in the NFL.
That’s where things get tricky for the Jets. They recently signed Brandon Stephens and already have Michael Carter II — one of the league’s top nickel corners — alongside Sauce Gardner. With Carter extended and Gardner due for a massive new deal, investing another top pick in a corner seems unlikely.
Even if the Jets trade down, Barron might still be a stretch with other key needs to address. But the reported interest suggests he’s on their radar. If nothing else, Barron is a name worth keeping in mind should the Jets pull off a draft-day surprise.
