Bristol City legend says he “really liked” Sunderland star.

Bristol City legend Louis Carey praised a Sunderland attacker, saying he was the only real threat against the Robins.

Sunderland were once battling Leeds United, Burnley, and Sheffield United for automatic promotion, but a recent dip in form has forced them to take the tougher path. Despite being virtually assured of a playoff spot, Regis Le Bris’ side has failed to win any of their last three matches, including a 2-1 loss to Bristol City this week. That match saw Trai Hume sent off just seven minutes in.

Eliezer Mayenda, a summer 2023 signing, gave Sunderland the lead in the first half and stood out with his lively attacking play. Bristol City legend Louis Carey praised the 19-year-old Spain U21 international, saying he was the only Sunderland player who truly threatened the Robins’ defense.

“I really liked him; I thought in the first half, he was excellent,” Carey said on Robins TV. “He was the outlet—used his body well, found space to turn, and pushed Bristol City back. He was the only player, I felt, who was going to impact the game from Sunderland.”

Mayenda has scored eight league goals in 35 appearances this season, playing across the frontline. With key fixtures against Blackburn, Oxford, and QPR remaining, Sunderland will be counting on him to step up as they prepare for the Championship playoffs.
