Shea Charles has confessed that Sheffield Wednesday’s form leading up to their victory over Middlesbrough was “frustrating.” The Owls broke a six-game winless streak on Easter Monday, rallying from behind to secure a 2-1 win over Boro. This victory was significant not only for snapping their poor run but also for ensuring they wouldn’t suffer six consecutive home losses, a feat they had never experienced before.
As a key player for the team this season, Charles, who is on loan from Southampton, has earned the admiration of Sheffield Wednesday supporters with his standout performances. However, despite his contributions, the team couldn’t manage to break into the top six in the Championship. Given the tough season that followed their promotion struggle last year, maintaining survival has been seen as progress, but Charles believes things could have been different if a few key moments had gone their way.
Reflecting on the season, Charles admitted, “It’s been so frustrating.” He mentioned the team’s exciting victories away at Plymouth and Norwich, particularly the comeback against Norwich, which gave them a real boost. However, things took a downturn after a loss before the international break. Despite starting with confidence, results didn’t fall in their favor. Charles pointed to key moments in matches, like the Cardiff away game, where the performance wasn’t terrible but didn’t lead to a win, and the Hull match, where he had a chance to score at the end. If that goal had gone in, he felt they would have continued their push for better results. He also mentioned the Blackburn match, feeling that by then, the team was long overdue for a win.
Charles is set to play in his final home match at Hillsborough this weekend, which will also be his second-to-last appearance for the club before he returns to Southampton. Regardless of the outcome, he is expected to receive a warm reception from the fans, acknowledging his efforts and impact during his time at the club.
