The New York Giants made a significant move in the NFL draft by selecting Penn State star Abdul Carter with the third overall pick, but the spotlight quickly shifted to their quarterback pick—Jaxson Dart. The Giants traded up to take Dart at No. 25 overall, making him a central figure in their future plans. Although Shedeur Sanders was initially considered a favorite for the Giants’ third pick, Dart emerged as their top choice, impressing both coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen throughout the draft process.
Dart, an Ole Miss product, is expected to be the Giants’ quarterback of the future. This aligns with the team’s focus on securing the key position after owner John Mara emphasized it as the offseason’s top priority. Daboll and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, who have helped develop quarterbacks like Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes, are now tasked with nurturing Dart’s potential to revitalize the franchise.
While Dart’s immediate role might be as a backup, with Russell Wilson slated as the starter, his future in New York is promising. Schoen and Daboll, who hadn’t selected a quarterback in their first three drafts, have now solidified their quarterback room by signing experienced players like Wilson and Jameis Winston and adding Dart as the centerpiece for the future.
The Giants’ strategy involved taking Carter first before trading up for Dart, ensuring they didn’t sacrifice their first third-round pick. This cautious approach shows their belief in Dart’s potential. Dart, confident and eager, expressed readiness for the challenge.
