Celtic’s Transfer Gamble Reaches Breaking Point – Will Leeds United Snatch Maeda in Shock Swoop?

Brendan Rodgers has already made significant moves in the transfer market by bringing back Jota, and with Kieran Tierney expected to follow, Celtic are reviving some of their former stars. However, there are warnings against pushing this trend too far—especially when it comes to a potential return for Kyogo Furuhashi. After a difficult stint in Saudi Arabia, Jota returned to Parkhead, and Tierney is poised to do the same once his contract with Arsenal expires. But Kyogo, who made a surprise move to Rennes in January, has struggled to find form in France, much like Jota did, prompting some to suggest he could be the next to return.

Despite the temptation, former Scotland international Paul Dickov cautions Celtic against repeatedly going back to the same well. Speaking to 10bet, he expressed skepticism about another reunion, questioning whether Kyogo would even want to return at this stage. “They’ve already brought back players like Jota and now Tierney. Kyogo going back? I’m not sure. It feels unlikely, and I think it would be a step too far,” Dickov explained.

On another note, Celtic are also evaluating their options as Jeffrey Schlupp’s loan from Crystal Palace nears its end. His contract at Selhurst Park is set to expire soon, and even with Tierney’s return and a new contract reportedly on the table for Greg Taylor, Dickov believes Schlupp would be a valuable permanent addition. “I’ve known Jeffrey since his Leicester days. He’s incredibly versatile—he can play at left back, left wing, in midfield, even started out as a striker. That kind of flexibility is invaluable,” said Dickov. He added that if Palace are willing to let him go, it could be a smart move for Celtic, particularly if the price is right.

Meanwhile, over in England, Leeds United have been tipped to take a chance on Daizen Maeda. Since stepping into a central striker role after Kyogo’s exit, Maeda has had a strong season with Celtic, drawing the attention of clubs south of the border. Former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie thinks Maeda could be a good fit for Leeds, both in terms of performance and budget. “Leeds need someone with a proven goal-scoring record, and Maeda fits that bill,” Hendrie told Football League World. He acknowledged there might be risks, given the jump from the Scottish Premiership to the English Championship or Premier League, but believes the forward’s track record suggests it’s a gamble worth taking.

Hendrie also noted that with Patrick Bamford potentially on his way out and Joel Piroe more comfortable playing behind the main striker, Leeds are in the market for a more traditional No. 9. Given Maeda’s output and experience, he’s likely to remain on the radar for a club seeking firepower without breaking the bank.
