Newcastle Open Talks for Ligue 1 Star as Goalkeeper Hunt Heats Up
Newcastle United have made their move for a highly-rated Ligue 1 goalkeeper as they look to strengthen between the posts this summer.
With Nick Pope facing injury setbacks and entering the twilight of his career at 33, the Magpies are actively exploring replacements. One standout candidate is Angers’ Yahia Fofana, who has caught Newcastle’s attention after an impressive season in France.
According to reports via Sport Witness, Newcastle have already initiated contact with Angers over a potential transfer. Fofana, whose contract runs until 2026, could be available for a modest fee between €8m and €10m (£6.8m–£8.4m), making him an attractive option.
The 6’4″ Ivorian has earned praise from scouts, with one calling him “incredible” for his agility, reactions, and shot-stopping ability. His distribution and dominance in the box further boost his credentials as a modern keeper. Despite strong interest from Torino and Southampton, a Premier League switch to St. James’ Park is seen as the more likely destination.
Though Burnley’s James Trafford remains Newcastle’s top choice after a record-equalling season in the Championship, Fofana’s value and upside make him a compelling alternative.
