Wrexham and Birmingham City, both newly promoted from League One, are now competing to sign the same player.
Wrexham and Birmingham City’s Promotion Rivalry Extends to Transfer Market
Despite finishing 19 points behind Birmingham in League One, Wrexham outperformed them in one key area last season. Both clubs earned automatic promotion to the Championship, alongside play-off winners Charlton Athletic, setting up an intriguing battle in the second tier.
Their head-to-head record was evenly matched—Birmingham won the first meeting, while the return fixture at the Racecourse Ground ended in a draw. Now, off the pitch, the rivalry continues, with Tom Brady’s Birmingham competing against Wrexham for the same transfer target.
Emile Heskey Advises Defender to Choose Birmingham Over Wrexham
Reports suggest both clubs are pursuing Swansea City defender Harry Darling, who is yet to accept a new contract and could become a free agent. While Norwich City have also emerged as contenders, ex-England striker Emile Heskey believes a move to Birmingham would be the smarter career move.
“Darling has Championship pedigree, which is crucial,” Heskey told Football League World. “The league is relentless—you need players who understand its demands. Birmingham would be a great step for him.”
Wrexham’s Alternative Defensive Targets
If Wrexham miss out on Darling, they have other options in mind. Ben Davies, who impressed for Wales recently, is on their radar, while experienced Premier League defenders Aaron Cresswell and Craig Dawson are also being monitored as potential reinforcements.
With both clubs now Championship-bound, their battle for signings could be just as intense as their on-field contests next season.
