Newcastle United are eager to add younger talent to their defence this summer, as Sven Botman is currently their only centre-back under 30.
Newcastle United boast some promising young talent in their backline with Lewis Hall, Tino Livramento, and Sven Botman. However, the rest of their defensive core — Dan Burn, Fabian Schar, Jamaal Lascelles, and Emil Krafth — are all over 30, prompting a push to bring in more youth this summer.
Marc Guehi, 23, remains Newcastle’s top centre-back target, but fresh reports from Italy suggest the Magpies are now keeping a close eye on 21-year-old Italian international Giorgio Scalvini. According to journalist Matteo Moretto, Newcastle are monitoring the Atalanta defender, though no official move has been made yet.
Atalanta are reportedly reluctant to let Scalvini go, viewing him as a vital part of their plans for next season. Still, Moretto hinted that Newcastle could test their resolve with a compelling offer. He stated that while several clubs, including Napoli, are interested, Newcastle appear “very interested” and could be preparing a bid in the coming days.
Despite his potential, Scalvini comes with some risk. He made only eight appearances last season due to an ACL injury followed by a shoulder issue. These setbacks may have been unfortunate coincidences, but Newcastle will no doubt conduct a thorough assessment before making a decision.
To strengthen their case, Newcastle could also lean on midfielder Sandro Tonali—who has played alongside Scalvini for the Italian national team—for further insight. If everything checks out, the Magpies may soon take action to secure another highly rated young defender.
