Burnley are closing in on a signing seen as James Trafford’s replacement, with negotiations with Newcastle United gaining pace.
Newcastle United’s hopes of signing James Trafford have received a major boost as Burnley move closer to securing his replacement.
According to Sky Germany, Burnley have agreed a deal worth £4.2 million to sign Max Weiss, a 21-year-old goalkeeper from Karlsruher SC, on a four-year contract. Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg reported that Weiss has already completed his medical and is expected to be announced soon. Plettenberg described Weiss as having the potential to become Burnley’s “long-term number one,” signaling a shift that could open the door for Trafford’s departure.
Weiss’s arrival comes at a crucial time. With Burnley lining up a new young goalkeeper, it suggests Trafford may soon be on the move — with Newcastle leading the race. The Magpies are currently in talks to bring Trafford to St. James’ Park, with a potential £40 million transfer on the table. If completed, the deal would make Trafford one of the most expensive goalkeepers of all time.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that negotiations are ongoing and could accelerate in July. He also noted that Trafford already agreed personal terms with Newcastle last summer and that agreement remains valid heading into this window.
Trafford himself has spoken about his desire to move last summer. Speaking on Fozcast with Ben Foster, the 22-year-old admitted he felt the opportunity to move to a club that suited him was too good to ignore. Though the transfer didn’t happen, he maintained a professional attitude and went on to enjoy a standout season, keeping 29 clean sheets in 45 Championship games to help Burnley earn promotion.
Now, with Newcastle needing a long-term successor to Nick Pope, Trafford remains top of their list. Should a deal be finalized, he is expected to initially compete with Pope before taking over the number one spot in the future.
