Sunderland AFC have reportedly struck a deal with French Ligue 1 side Strasbourg for the signing of highly-rated midfielder and club captain, Habib Diarra. According to Foot Mercato, the 21-year-old is on the verge of completing a record-breaking transfer to Wearside, with the total fee set to reach €35 million including add-ons—an amount that surpasses a previous offer made by Leeds United.
Following their promotion to the Premier League after a dramatic play-off final victory over Sheffield United, Sunderland have moved quickly to bolster their squad. The need for a new midfielder arose after Jobe Bellingham departed the club to join Bundesliga heavyweights Borussia Dortmund, following in the footsteps of his elder brother Jude. Diarra had been made available by Strasbourg, under manager Liam Rosenior, provided a suitable offer was received—and Sunderland’s bid met that threshold.
The transfer is not only a landmark deal for Sunderland but also represents a record sale for Strasbourg.
