Josh Windass appears ready to draw the curtain on his time at Sheffield Wednesday, with reports from GiveMeSport indicating that the forward has informed the club of his intention to leave this summer. His potential departure comes amid ongoing financial turmoil at Hillsborough, where the club has again struggled to meet wage obligations. Despite the instability, Wednesday are preparing for another campaign in the Championship, but losing a player of Windass’ caliber would be a major blow.
Since arriving in 2020, Windass has been a pivotal figure for the Owls, emerging as their top scorer last season with 13 league goals. At 31, he’s become one of the club’s senior voices and most dependable performers. On the Open Goal podcast, Windass reflected on his tenure: “I’ve been there five years now, which is obviously a long time, but I’ve enjoyed it. I’m the top scorer for the club this century… I scored from a yard out at Watford in the final game and I was buzzing.” While he still has a year left on his contract, his comments hinted at uncertainty: “I’ve got another year but we’ll see.”
Windass has netted 50 goals in 173 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday, becoming a fan favourite and playing a crucial role in their promotion from League One under former boss Darren Moore. His journey to Hillsborough began with a loan move that quickly turned permanent. If he does exit this summer, the Owls could face the painful scenario of competing against him in the same division next season.
The attacker’s past clubs include Huddersfield Town, Harrogate Railway Athletic, Accrington Stanley, Rangers, and Wigan Athletic, where he scored nine goals in 55 matches before making his move to South Yorkshire.
With Sheffield Wednesday struggling financially and their future clouded by uncertainty, they risk losing key assets like Windass. To make matters worse, head coach Danny Rohl, who heroically kept the club in the Championship after taking charge in October 2023, is also reportedly on the verge of leaving. The club, which finished a modest 12th last season, could be set for a significant reshuffle — and Windass’ exit would be one of the most significant pieces of that puzzle.
