Sunderland Eye Shock Swoop for Long-Term Newcastle Target After Surprise Exit

Since Eddie Howe took charge at Newcastle United, Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been repeatedly linked with a move to Tyneside. The media often pushed the narrative that Howe viewed the Everton striker as a solution to Newcastle’s attacking woes—either before Alexander Isak’s arrival or during Callum Wilson’s frequent injury absences that left the squad short of reliable forward options.

However, Newcastle fans, including the author of this piece, were far less enthusiastic. Many viewed Calvert-Lewin as a step down from Callum Wilson. While both players have struggled with injuries, Wilson has generally been the more prolific goal scorer—though last season may be an exception best left unmentioned.

Interestingly, it’s now Sunderland who are being linked with Calvert-Lewin. After nine years with Everton, the striker is a free agent, and newly-promoted Sunderland are reportedly exploring the possibility of bringing him in. While Newcastle supporters have long resisted the idea of DCL joining their side, there’s a sense of respect for what he could offer the Black Cats.

A move to the Stadium of Light might actually suit all parties. Calvert-Lewin’s Premier League experience could be invaluable to Sunderland, whose current squad lacks top-flight exposure. Whether he can stay fit and rediscover his scoring touch remains to be seen—but even just his presence could be a boost.

Though it’s unlikely that his signing alone would be enough to keep Sunderland in the Premier League, the transfer could still be a win for Newcastle, Sunderland, and Calvert-Lewin himself.
