British billionaire Richard Branson playfully threw a drink at Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze after losing a game of chess during their stay at a luxury hotel in Mallorca. The light-hearted moment came as Eze enjoyed some downtime following a successful season that saw him help Palace lift the FA Cup.
Branson shared a video on Instagram showing Eze defeating him in chess. After being checkmated, the Virgin Group founder jokingly tossed his drink on Eze, who responded with laughter.
Eze, a strong chess player who has even won tournaments, had a standout season with 14 goals and 11 assists. Now, he’s attracting serious transfer interest, with Arsenal and Tottenham reportedly eyeing a move. Palace are expected to demand his full £68 million release clause.
Branson praised Eze, calling him “delightful” and revealing they played five games, splitting four before Eze won the decider. Despite the loss, Branson enjoyed the games and their time together, saying he looks forward to a rematch.
Eze is due to rejoin his Palace teammates this week, with the club’s pre-season campaign starting on July 12 in a friendly against Millwall.
