Newcastle United are making significant moves in the summer transfer market, with their attention now turning to Atalanta’s highly rated centre-back, Giorgio Scalvini. The Magpies have already made progress in their pursuit of Anthony Elanga and are believed to have agreed personal terms with Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, with only the transfer fee left to settle. As these deals near completion, the club is intensifying efforts to strengthen its defensive line, with Scalvini emerging as a top priority.
The Italian defender, who made his professional debut at just 17, has been impressive throughout his young career, though the 2024/25 season was disrupted by injuries. Talks between Newcastle and Atalanta reportedly took place over the weekend, and respected journalist Fabrizio Romano has provided fresh insight into the negotiations. Despite Newcastle’s strong interest, Atalanta initially labelled Scalvini as “unsellable,” recognising the 20-year-old’s immense potential. This has made negotiations difficult, though Newcastle remain hopeful of finding a breakthrough soon.
Romano revealed that Newcastle are prepared to make a substantial financial commitment to secure Scalvini’s signature. He also highlighted that Atalanta president Antonio Percassi is notoriously tough in transfer dealings, especially when it comes to selling top-tier talent. While Newcastle are leading the race at the moment, several other Premier League clubs are keeping a close eye on developments, suggesting that competition could soon intensify.
Newcastle’s urgency is understandable. If they wish to land Scalvini, they must act fast before rival clubs enter the fray. Fortunately, they currently appear to be the only side in direct talks with Atalanta, giving them an early advantage. Adding to their optimism is Scalvini’s previously stated ambition to play in the Premier League—a dream Newcastle could help realise if their offer is compelling enough.
Although clubs like Liverpool and Manchester City have previously been linked with the young defender, it’s now Newcastle’s opportunity to turn admiration into action. The reported fee of around £40 million is significant, but Eddie Howe and his team seem willing to pay it to secure a player with such promise and long-term potential.
