Mark Robins Breaks Silence on Coates and Walters Alliance Ahead of High-Stakes Transfer Window

Mark Robins has expressed deep gratitude for the backing he’s received from within Stoke City, particularly from owner John Coates and sporting director Jon Walters, during what he describes as four tough months in charge. Since stepping into the managerial role on New Year’s Day, Robins has had one clear focus: to steer the club away from relegation. That mission was successfully accomplished with a final-day draw against Derby County, securing Stoke’s Championship status.

However, Robins stressed that the club must not find itself in such a precarious position again anytime soon. He emphasized the importance of long-term planning and voiced confidence in the efforts being made behind the scenes to move Stoke in the right direction. A key part of that vision is the strong and developing relationship he’s built with Coates and Walters, which he believes will be crucial as the club heads into what he describes as a pivotal and challenging summer transfer window.

Speaking about the duo, Robins was full of praise: “Brilliant, honestly,” he said. “They are Stoke City through and through.” He noted Coates’ deep-rooted connection to the club and commended Walters for his relentless work ethic and genuine passion for building something lasting for Stoke, both in the present and future. Robins acknowledged that while the process will take time, he believes the outcomes will significantly strengthen the club for years to come. Important decisions regarding the squad are on the horizon, and he suggested those calls will be made in the near future.

With eight first-team players out of contract and five loan players set to return to their parent clubs, Stoke faces a summer of considerable change. There are also fringe players who may be moved on, and valuable assets that might be sold to help fund the club’s plans within the limits of Financial Fair Play regulations.

Meanwhile, off the pitch, John Coates made a generous gesture to traveling supporters by providing a free bar at Ricardo’s, located behind the Boothen End, for fans returning from Derby—adding a touch of celebration to a hard-fought survival.
