Marie Hourihan exits Stoke City Women after two seasons at the helm.
Marie Hourihan has decided to part ways with Stoke City Women after turning down a new contract.
The 36-year-old former Republic of Ireland goalkeeper spent two transformative years with the club, taking charge shortly after they became semi-professional. Under her leadership, Stoke achieved their highest-ever finish in the FA Women’s National League, securing third place in the third tier of English women’s football.
This season alone, Hourihan guided the team to a League Cup final and clinched the Staffordshire FA Challenge Cup for a record 17th time. Stoke also netted an impressive 102 goals throughout the campaign, a testament to her impact on the squad.
Hourihan expressed her gratitude on social media, writing:
“What a season and what a group. Memories have been made for life… To finish third, the team’s best-ever league finish, and experience a first League Cup final — that’s down to the hard work of a special group of players and staff. As they say, all good things must come to an end.”
With her strong track record, Hourihan is expected to attract attention from other clubs. Meanwhile, Stoke will begin the search for a new head coach.
Stephanie Wakelin, the club’s women and girls performance director, praised Hourihan’s tenure:
“Marie is to be congratulated for the team’s progress over the past two seasons. We respect her decision, thank her sincerely, and wish her success in the future.”
