Danny Rohl has informed senior players at Sheffield Wednesday that he will be stepping down as manager, ending his near two-year tenure at Hillsborough. Rohl, who had not returned for pre-season training, confirmed his departure in private conversations with key dressing room figures, effectively signalling the end of his time with the club.
Leicester City, who recently parted ways with Ruud van Nistelrooy, are in discussions with Wednesday over a compensation deal for the 36-year-old coach. Brentford are also reportedly interested in Rohl, considering him for an assistant role under newly appointed manager Keith Andrews.
Rohl earned considerable praise for steadying the ship at Wednesday during a turbulent period under the ownership of Dejphon Chansiri. His leadership saw the club rise to a mid-table 12th-place finish in the Championship after initially guiding them away from relegation danger in the 2023–24 season. Despite his contributions, questions were raised by players about the lack of planning for the upcoming campaign—concerns Rohl addressed by claiming he had done everything within his capacity.
The likelihood of Rohl’s departure had been growing since the season’s end, but the financial barrier of his contract—which runs until 2027—has been a sticking point. The compensation required by Wednesday remains a major consideration for his suitors.
In Rohl’s expected absence, Sheffield Wednesday are set to promote assistant manager Henrik Pedersen. The 47-year-old Dane, who joined in 2023 and is highly regarded within footballing circles, especially for his work within the Red Bull system, is expected to assume full managerial duties.
Back in May, Rohl hinted at his ambitions beyond Wednesday, expressing a desire to coach at the highest levels of the game, possibly in the Bundesliga. He acknowledged having a mutual understanding with the club’s owner about his future but remained tight-lipped about the details.
As Sheffield Wednesday grapple with financial difficulties and growing pressure on owner Dejphon Chansiri to sell the club, Brentford’s Keith Andrews is also believed to be eyeing Pedersen for a potential role in his own backroom staff.
