Aston Villa are reportedly battling Newcastle United to sign FC Porto striker Samu Aghehowa, who has a hefty £85 million release clause. The 21-year-old forward, known for his physicality and eye for goal, could be a direct replacement for Jhon Duran at Villa Park.
Villa recently avoided breaching Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) by agreeing to sell their women’s team to holding company V Sports. This financial relief means they no longer need to offload key players, such as Ollie Watkins, who had previously been linked with a move away to raise funds.
With Watkins now likely to stay, Unai Emery is seeking strong competition up front. Samu, who scored 27 goals in 45 appearances for Porto last season, fits the bill. However, Porto are unwilling to negotiate and will only let him go if his full release clause is triggered.
At 6’4″, Samu’s presence could bolster Villa’s attack significantly. If signed, he could form a powerful partnership with Watkins, possibly outperforming the previous Watkins-Duran duo.
