Conor Townsend believes there were plenty of positives to take from last season, despite the disappointment of relegation from the Premier League.
Townsend, who joined from West Bromwich Albion last summer for £750,000, knew he was coming in primarily as cover for Leif Davis. While his playing time was limited to a handful of appearances in the league and cup competitions, his impact behind the scenes was still felt.
“Personally, I’d have liked to play more,” Townsend told TWTD. “But I knew my role was to support the squad. Leif had an outstanding first half of the season, and credit to him for that. I just tried to help however I could.”
Though the team fell short in their goal to remain in the top flight, Townsend says the squad is returning hungry to put things right. “We’re coming back this summer full of determination to fix what went wrong and push for a return to the Premier League.”
Despite the setbacks, Townsend praised the positive atmosphere at the club. “The culture here has been clear since I joined. Even when results weren’t going our way, the unity and effort never dropped. We always pulled each other through in training and matches.”
Townsend, who had Premier League experience from his time with West Brom, acknowledged the challenge of surviving in the top tier. “The gap between the Premier League and Championship is growing. It’s tough for promoted sides to bridge it. Last season we had moments where we were unlucky, especially early on, but there were still positives to build on.”
As pre-season begins, Townsend is focused on the future. “We know what we’re capable of. If we keep that same unity and hunger, we’ll be pushing at the right end of the table again.”
