Crystal Palace may sue UEFA if blocked from next season’s Europa League.
WHAT HAPPENED?
According to BBC Sport, Crystal Palace are prepared to launch legal action if UEFA blocks them from competing in next season’s Europa League. UEFA was expected to announce a decision on June 27 regarding Palace’s eligibility, as the governing body investigates potential breaches of multi-club ownership rules linked to co-owner John Textor’s involvement with both Palace and Lyon.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Palace’s historic FA Cup victory over Manchester City in May secured their first major trophy, along with a Europa League spot. However, that European dream is now under threat. The club is reportedly growing increasingly frustrated with UEFA’s delay and believes they are being treated unfairly during the process.
DID YOU KNOW?
Textor owns 77% of Lyon through his Eagle Football Group and currently holds a 43% stake in Crystal Palace, which he has agreed to sell to New York Jets owner Woody Johnson. Despite stepping down from Lyon’s leadership board and trying to cut ties with Palace, his dual ownership could still result in UEFA disqualifying the Premier League club from European competition.
WHAT NEXT?
Palace are waiting on UEFA’s verdict. If Lyon’s relegation to Ligue 2 is upheld by French authorities, the French side would lose their UEFA competition licence — potentially clearing the way for Palace to participate in the Europa League next season.
