Sheffield United have missed out on re-signing midfielder Tommy Doyle, who has instead joined Birmingham City from Wolverhampton Wanderers. The 23-year-old is a familiar name to Blades supporters, having impressed during a loan spell at Bramall Lane from Manchester City in 2022. Doyle’s energetic and combative presence in midfield helped Sheffield United secure promotion to the Premier League under then-manager Paul Heckingbottom. The club had hoped to bring him back, but he eventually made a permanent move to Wolves.
Although Doyle had a limited role at Molineux last season, Sheffield United were reportedly interested in rekindling a deal for the former England youth international. Sunderland, a Premier League side, were also said to be monitoring the situation. However, Championship newcomers Birmingham City have now clinched his signature, announcing him as their latest addition on a season-long loan. He follows goalkeeper James Beadle, formerly of Sheffield Wednesday, to St. Andrew’s.
Speaking to Blues+, Doyle expressed his enthusiasm about the move. He described Birmingham as a “big club with big ambition” and said he was eager to get to work. Doyle highlighted the club’s impressive momentum and clear vision for the future as key factors in his decision. He praised the way Birmingham is conducting its transfer business, adding that it sends a strong message of intent. The midfielder also revealed that he had known about the interest from Birmingham early on, which helped solidify his choice. According to Doyle, the ambition and direction of the club made the offer hard to refuse.
