John Ruddy and Newcastle players mourn Diogo Jota’s tragic death.

Diogo Jota’s tragic death has stunned the football world, with John Ruddy leading Newcastle United’s heartfelt tributes to his former teammate.

The football world was left in shock early Thursday morning following the tragic news that Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has died at the age of 28 in a car crash. His younger brother, Andre Silva, a 26-year-old footballer for Portuguese side Penafiel, also lost his life in the accident.

According to Marca, the incident occurred in Zamora, Spain, when the brothers’ car veered off the road and caught fire. The Daily Mail reports the vehicle’s tyre blew out while overtaking on the A-52 highway, causing it to roll off the road before bursting into flames.

Jota had recently married his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso, in Porto on June 22. The couple shared three children.

Tributes poured in from across the football community, including several messages from Newcastle United. Goalkeeper John Ruddy, who played alongside Jota at Wolves, shared a heartfelt message on Instagram: “Such sad news. Sending my thoughts and prayers to Diogo & Andre’s family. Was a pleasure to know you, my friend. Rest in peace.”

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer expressed his grief with a simple post on X (formerly Twitter): “Heartbreaking,” accompanied by crying and broken heart emojis.

The club’s official account also posted: “We are deeply saddened to learn the heartbreaking news of Diogo Jota’s passing. Our heartfelt condolences are with Diogo’s young family, friends and everyone at Liverpool Football Club during this incredibly difficult time. Rest in peace, Diogo.”

Newcastle players Sandro Tonali and Sven Botman also paid tribute on social media, with Tonali posting a prayer emoji and Botman sharing a heart, prayer, and dove emoji.

Liverpool FC released a statement confirming the devastating loss:
“Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota. The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.

“Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss. We will continue to provide them with our full support.”
