Nottingham Forest have honoured Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota after his tragic death in a car accident.
Nottingham Forest have joined the football world in mourning the tragic death of Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota, who passed away at the age of 28 alongside his younger brother, Andre Silva, in a car accident in Spain.
The fatal crash occurred on Thursday morning in the Zamora region, with both brothers reportedly in the vehicle when it veered off the road. In a tribute on X, Forest wrote:
“Everyone at Nottingham Forest is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva. Our heartfelt thoughts and condolences go out to their families, loved ones, and all at Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel during this incredibly difficult time.”
Liverpool also released a statement expressing devastation over the news and asked for privacy for the family, friends, and teammates of both brothers. The club emphasized that they would continue to offer full support to all affected.
Forest head coach Nuno Espirito Santo, who managed Jota at both Porto and Wolverhampton Wanderers, will feel the loss deeply. Jota’s move to Wolves in 2017—initially on loan from Atlético Madrid—was his introduction to English football, and he quickly became a fan favourite. He helped Wolves win the Championship and scored 44 goals in 131 appearances before joining Liverpool in 2020 for a reported £41 million.
Wolves posted their tribute on X, stating:
“We are heartbroken. Diogo was adored by our fans, loved by his teammates and cherished by everyone who worked with him during his time at Wolves. The memories he created will never be forgotten.”
The Portuguese Football Federation also confirmed the deaths, calling it a devastating loss to Portuguese football.
“Diogo Jota was not only a fantastic player with almost 50 caps for the national team, but also an extraordinary person who was respected by all his team-mates and opponents,” their statement read. “We have lost two champions.”
The tragedy occurred just weeks after Jota married his long-term partner, Rute Cardoso. The couple shared three children.
Jota had earned 49 caps for Portugal and scored 14 goals. Since joining Liverpool, he netted 65 times in 182 games and won multiple trophies, including the Premier League, FA Cup, and Carabao Cup. He was also a Champions League runner-up in 2022.
A statement from FC Porto, where both brothers once played, added:
“Porto is in mourning. It is with shock and deep sorrow that we send our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who was also our athlete in the youth ranks. Rest in peace.”
