Leeds United were left frustrated following their 2-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at Elland Road on Saturday — a result that felt particularly harsh given how dominant Daniel Farke’s men had been throughout the match. Despite creating numerous chances and controlling possession, a few costly defensive lapses and missed opportunities proved decisive. Tottenham boss Thomas Frank maintained that his side were in control, but post-match comments from his own players painted a different picture. However, beyond the disappointment of the scoreline, Leeds may now face more serious consequences as the FA investigates an unsavoury incident that occurred during the game.
The controversy erupted after Mohammed Kudus scored what proved to be Tottenham’s winning goal in the second half. The Ghanaian celebrated by sprinting toward the South Stand and performing his trademark move — sitting on a ball boy’s stool beside the advertising boards. This provoked an angry reaction from a section of the home crowd, and one furious Leeds fan threw a bottle in Kudus’ direction. Although the object missed its target, it narrowly avoided causing a potentially serious injury and risked escalating the tension further inside the stadium.
Former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett condemned the incident, stating that it posed a serious threat to player safety and that Leeds United must take decisive action. Speaking to MOTD Leeds News, Hackett urged the club to identify the individual responsible and issue a lifetime ban from Elland Road. He also called on the Football Association to impose sanctions on Leeds for failing to prevent such behaviour from a supporter.
“Doing that puts the safety of players and stewards at risk,” Hackett warned. “Leeds United, as a club, must take stronger action. Using the surveillance systems inside the stadium, they should search out the culprits and issue a lifetime ban. The Football Association must act and apply the appropriate sanctions.”
If the FA decides to review the incident, Leeds could face a significant financial penalty, while the supporter involved will almost certainly be banned from attending matches at Elland Road again.
