The FA has charged Millwall after fans directed homophobic abuse at Ben Chilwell from the stands.
During last month’s FA Cup match between Millwall and Crystal Palace, Chelsea loanee Ben Chilwell was subjected to homophobic abuse from Millwall fans. The match also saw Eagles striker Jean-Phillipe Mateta injured after a collision with goalkeeper Liam Roberts. While the FA condemned the “let him die” chants directed at Mateta during his treatment, they could not investigate, as those chants did not violate regulations. However, the FA intends to take action against Millwall for the abuse aimed at Chilwell.
The FA announced that Millwall has been charged with misconduct related to crowd control during the FA Cup tie on March 1. According to the statement, it is alleged that during the fifth and 20th minutes, the club failed to ensure that spectators and supporters behaved in an orderly manner or refrained from using offensive, abusive, or insulting language with reference to sexual orientation.
Millwall responded, emphasizing their commitment to eradicating homophobic chanting. The club’s official statement reiterated their zero-tolerance policy towards all forms of discrimination and their determination to address this issue. Millwall has until Wednesday to respond to the FA charge.
