The “outstanding” Everton star who impressed even Kevin De Bruyne in Man City loss

Everton couldn’t hang on as Manchester City snatched a late win at Goodison Park.

David Moyes and his Everton squad delivered a strong performance against Manchester City, one that arguably deserved more than a narrow defeat at Goodison Park. After a draw against Arsenal and a win the previous weekend, the Toffees couldn’t add any points this time around.

Ahead of the match, Pep Guardiola spoke highly of Moyes, and he certainly got a taste of Everton’s refreshed style under the 61-year-old manager. However, the Blues continue to struggle in front of goal, putting extra pressure on the defense to deliver near-perfect displays.

With only two home games left at Goodison Park, Everton’s backline stood firm for much of the match, showing real resilience against the reigning champions. One standout player was Jake O’Brien, who earned widespread praise for his defensive heroics.

Since Moyes’ arrival, O’Brien has cemented his place in the starting lineup. Against City, he caught the eye with a crucial intervention, blocking a goal-bound effort from Kevin De Bruyne. Tim Sherwood, commenting on Sky Sports, was in awe: “Wonderful defending! I would have put my life on De Bruyne scoring there!”

With De Bruyne set to leave Manchester City this summer, O’Brien’s diving header denied him one last goal against Everton, with goalkeeper Jordan Pickford already beaten. O’Brien’s emergence also raises questions about former manager Sean Dyche’s decision not to give him a chance earlier.

O’Brien has been a revelation since January, with James Tarkowski even calling him a “monster” for his displays at right-back. Ironically, Tarkowski’s recent injury might now open the door for O’Brien to shift into his preferred centre-back role.

Against City, O’Brien logged:
– 90 minutes played
– 2 clearances
– 1 blocked shot
– 1 goal-line clearance
– 1 aerial duel won (1/1)

He continues to impress and could be set to finally showcase his full potential in his natural position at the heart of Everton’s defense.
