Nebraska baseball swept Saturday’s doubleheader against Northwestern to win the series.
After a tough loss in Friday’s opener, Nebraska baseball bounced back with authority on Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader against Northwestern with wins of 14-4 and 5-2 to clinch the series.
In Game 1, Nebraska erupted early. Gabe Swansen launched a grand slam in the first inning, followed by Max Buettenback’s two-run homer in the second to give the Huskers a commanding 7-0 lead. Swansen drove in four runs, while Buettenback, Joshua Overbeek, and Will Jesske each added two RBIs. The game ended after seven innings due to the Big Ten’s 10-run rule.
Starter Ty Horn pitched 5.0 innings, allowing three runs on five hits with six strikeouts and two walks to earn his first win of the season. Northwestern’s Matthew Kouser gave up 11 earned runs over 5.0 innings and took the loss. Nebraska added six more runs across the fifth and sixth innings, capitalizing on nine walks issued by Wildcat pitchers.
In the finale, Nebraska grabbed a 1-0 lead on a wild pitch in the third, then extended it with RBI hits from Overbeek and Case Sanderson in the fourth. Gabe Swansen added a steal of home in the fifth to make it 4-0.
Northwestern got on the board in the seventh after an error led to a two-out RBI double. Nebraska responded with a sac fly to push the lead to 5-1. A solo homer in the eighth made it 5-2, and the Wildcats threatened in the ninth before closer Luke Broderick shut the door with two strikeouts, securing his ninth save.
Senior Jackson Brockett started Game 2 and delivered 5.0 shutout innings, allowing just two hits while striking out five. It was his longest outing since opening weekend.
Nebraska (19-21, 7-11 Big Ten) returns home Tuesday to host Kansas at 6 p.m. CT.
