Hawthorn has announced three changes to its lineup for Sunday’s highly anticipated clash with West Coast, marking the team’s first appearance at Marvel Stadium this season. The match is scheduled to begin at 4:45pm AEST. Head Coach Sam Mitchell confirmed the adjustments during his Friday morning press conference, highlighting the inclusion of some exciting talent.
Midfielder Henry Hustwaite has been called up for his first AFL game of the year after a standout run in the VFL with Box Hill, where he averaged an impressive 34.3 disposals across his first three matches. His consistent performances have earned him a well-deserved opportunity at the top level.
Also returning to the senior side is Bailey Macdonald, who will play his first AFL match since 2023. Known for his speed and creativity off half-back, Macdonald has impressed early in the VFL season and now gets the chance to display his dynamic play on the AFL stage once again.
Rounding out the inclusions is Jack Ginnivan, who makes his return to the senior squad following a stellar outing for Box Hill on Easter Sunday. Ginnivan contributed four goals and 22 disposals in a commanding 46-point win over Geelong, underlining his readiness to step back into the AFL spotlight.
On the other side of the changes, Conor Nash will miss out after receiving a four-match suspension earlier in the week. Veteran Luke Breust has been managed for this round, while Changkuoth Jiath has been omitted from the side.
Hawthorn’s Executive General Manager of Football, Rob McCartney, expressed his enthusiasm about the inclusions. He praised Hustwaite’s growth and commitment, noting the hard work he’s put in to enhance his midfield game. McCartney also commended Ginnivan’s leadership and performance at Box Hill, emphasizing the forward’s readiness for AFL action. Additionally, he highlighted Macdonald’s recent VFL form, lauding his ability to rebound with both precision and pace.
Overall, the changes signal Hawthorn’s intent to inject energy and form-driven talent into the side as they prepare for a pivotal encounter at Marvel Stadium.
