Leeds United on High Alert as ‘Fantastic’ Premier League Star Emerges as Dream £10m Signing for The 49ers

Replacing Illan Meslier will be one of Leeds United’s top priorities this summer, with the long-serving goalkeeper expected to leave after six years at Elland Road. Meslier, who first joined Leeds on loan from Lorient in 2019, has amassed 214 appearances for the club. However, under Daniel Farke, Meslier has fallen out of favour following a string of costly errors against teams like Hull City, Swansea, and Sunderland during what has been a disappointing campaign despite the club’s promotion. In his place, Karl Darlow has stepped in to offer a more calming and reliable presence between the posts.

Although Meslier’s contract runs until June 2026, journalist Phil Hay reports that his time at Leeds is effectively over, suggesting a clean break would benefit both parties. Leeds have already been linked with several goalkeepers in preparation for Meslier’s likely departure. Should Leeds secure promotion, the need for a top-level replacement will become even more pressing.

Interestingly, four English goalkeepers have surfaced as potential targets for Leeds. Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale reportedly has a relegation clause that could trigger a move, while Burnley’s James Trafford—who is competing with Dan James for Player of the Season honours—is another name to watch. Newcastle could swoop for Trafford, which might make Nick Pope available, and Wolves’ Sam Johnstone is also a candidate, with Leeds allegedly considering a £10 million bid for the experienced shot-stopper.

Speaking to Football League World, Lee Hendrie praised Johnstone, stating that with Meslier struggling for form, Johnstone’s Premier League experience and international caps would make him a superb choice for Leeds. Hendrie emphasized that Johnstone, a proven Premier League performer, would fit perfectly as the club’s new number one.

However, there remains a question mark over whether Johnstone would actually represent a significant upgrade over Meslier, especially if the Frenchman can rediscover his best form. Statistically, the two have performed quite similarly across both the Championship and Premier League levels. If Leeds are serious about staying competitive after promotion, they might need to invest more heavily to secure a goalkeeper who is a clear step above Meslier—or look beyond England and into the European market for a high-quality solution.
