Fabrizio Romano Drops Bombshell: £3.4m Transfer Plot Twist Leaves Ex-Sunderland Talent and Leeds United at the Center of Drama

Fabrizio Romano has reported a surprising £3.4 million transfer move involving former Sunderland prospect Sam Greenwood, who is set to leave Leeds United. According to reports, the 23-year-old is closing in on a permanent switch to Polish club Pogoń Szczecin in a deal worth around €4 million.

Greenwood, capable of playing both as an attacking midfielder and forward, first joined Leeds from Arsenal in 2020 for a fee of about £1.5 million. At that time, he was considered one of the most promising players in his age group, having impressed at youth level with both Arsenal and England. His arrival was seen as a major coup for Leeds. After excelling in the youth ranks, Greenwood eventually broke into the senior side, going on to make 35 appearances. His highlight came when he scored his only Premier League goal against AFC Bournemouth. Despite this progress, manager Daniel Farke deemed him surplus to requirements, leading to loan spells away from Elland Road.

During the 2023–24 season, Greenwood played for Middlesbrough before joining Preston North End on loan for the 2024–25 campaign. At Deepdale, he scored seven goals in 45 matches. While he made a strong start under manager Paul Heckingbottom, his form dipped in the second half of the season, and Preston ultimately decided against activating their £1.5 million buy option. Returning to Leeds for pre-season, Greenwood’s future remained uncertain, especially as the club prepared for a major squad overhaul ahead of their return to the Premier League.

Romano revealed on X that Greenwood is now set to join Pogoń Szczecin, who finished fourth in Poland’s top division last season. He is expected to sign a three-year contract with an option for a fourth year, in a deal worth around €4 million.

Greenwood’s departure adds another twist to what has been a turbulent career so far. Born in Sunderland, he began his football journey with his boyhood club before making the switch to Arsenal at the age of 16. Earlier this summer, he was seen training at the CL Football Academy alongside coaches Carl Lawson and Rees Greenwood, both former Sunderland academy products, as part of his off-season preparations.
