One of Leeds’ most iconic pubs has now taken on a new role as the central base for a campaign dedicated to celebrating a Leeds United legend. The Old Peacock, situated directly opposite Elland Road, has been a favourite gathering spot for Whites fans for generations. This week, it was temporarily renamed in honour of Patrick Bamford, with the pub’s close ties to the club inspiring its decision to throw its support behind the WILKO92 movement.
The WILKO92 campaign, led by supporters, is focused on raising funds to erect a statue of Howard Wilkinson. Wilkinson is remembered as the manager who guided Leeds into the top flight and then, just two years later, led them to the league title. He also played a key role in developing local talent through the Thorp Arch academy. To this day, he remains the last English manager to win the English top-flight crown.
Jamie Lawson, owner of Ossett Brewery and The Old Peacock, explained the decision to back the project: “The Old Peacock has always been more than just a pub – it’s part of Leeds United’s heritage and the Elland Road community. We’re honoured to make it the headquarters of WILKO92 and to raise a glass to Howard Wilkinson, a manager who gave this city unforgettable moments. Just as fans have gathered here before matches for decades, we hope they’ll now gather to support this campaign and celebrate Wilkinson’s achievements, especially the historic 1991/92 title win.”
As part of the campaign, the pub will serve a specially brewed Wilko92 Tribute Ale, with proceeds from every pint contributing to the statue fund. A statement from the organisers highlighted the pub’s deep roots in the city’s history: founded in 1826, The Old Peacock has long been woven into Leeds matchday traditions. From its early role as a meeting place for miners and mill workers to becoming the unofficial headquarters for Leeds United fans after the club’s formation in 1919, it has stood as a hub of football, community, and shared passion. Matchdays continue to fill its bars and beer garden with chants, celebrations, and shared memories.
Now, the same spirit will be channelled into WILKO92 — ensuring Wilkinson’s contributions are permanently recognised alongside other Leeds greats such as Don Revie and Billy Bremner. The tribute ale will also be available across Ossett pubs in Yorkshire, allowing supporters to honour Wilkinson with every pint poured or can purchased.
Dave Tomlinson, one of the organisers of the campaign, welcomed The Old Peacock’s involvement. “There’s no more fitting home for this campaign than The Old Peacock,” he said. “It has always been central to Leeds United’s story — and now it will be at the heart of preserving Howard Wilkinson’s legacy.”
