Steven Gerrard has emerged as the front-runner to become the next permanent manager of Rangers, according to reports from Football Insider. It’s been a challenging season for the Glasgow club. Despite a commendable run to the quarter-finals of the Europa League, Rangers have faced significant struggles in domestic competitions. They fell short in the Scottish Premiership, with arch-rivals Celtic claiming the title, and also lost to Celtic in the League Cup final. To make matters worse, they were eliminated from the Scottish Cup in the fifth round after a stunning defeat to Queen’s Park.
Philippe Clement was initially appointed as the manager at the start of the season, but due to inconsistent results, he was dismissed in February. Since then, former Rangers midfielder Barry Ferguson has taken on the role of interim manager. The club is now preparing to appoint a permanent boss ahead of the new season.
Recent reports suggest that Rangers are keen on reuniting with a former manager, and Steven Gerrard is reportedly their primary target. The Liverpool legend, widely regarded as one of the best Premier League midfielders, has been out of work since January after leaving Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq. Gerrard began his managerial career with Rangers in 2018, where he gradually built a strong squad that eventually won the Scottish Premiership in his final season, going unbeaten in the league. His success at Rangers earned him recognition, with former defender Dean Holden even dubbing him “one of the best young managers.”

However, Gerrard’s career trajectory has not gone as expected. His success at Rangers earned him a move to the Premier League in 2021 with Aston Villa. Unfortunately, after a string of disappointing results, he was sacked less than a year into his tenure. He then made the surprising move to Saudi Arabia, a destination that few anticipated when he initially joined Villa. If Rangers were to bring Gerrard back, they would be hiring a manager with intimate knowledge of the club, and most importantly, one who knows how to win the league.
Gerrard remains a beloved figure among Rangers fans, and with him currently without a job, his return to Ibrox would likely be a smooth process. While Ferguson is also being considered due to his time as interim boss, Gerrard’s extensive managerial experience could give him the edge in the race for the permanent role.
