Steelers’ latest misstep may lead to wrong QB pick in 2025 draft.

Someone in the front office made a mistake.

If there’s one thing the Pittsburgh Steelers can’t afford in the 2025 NFL Draft, it’s selecting the wrong quarterback early. After Ben Roethlisberger retired, Mike Tomlin and former GM Kevin Colbert locked in Kenny Pickett as their next franchise QB—a decision that hasn’t paid off. Now, the Steelers are on the verge of starting a different quarterback for the fifth consecutive season.

On Friday, Pittsburgh hosted Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart for a top-30 visit. Dart is climbing draft boards and is frequently mocked to the Steelers at pick No. 21. But while the team evaluated him in Pittsburgh, Shedeur Sanders was lighting it up at the Colorado NFL Showcase—without key Steelers staff in attendance.

Most experts rank Sanders ahead of Dart, but a scheduling blunder prevented Pittsburgh from scouting him live. That decision could cost them. While the team did their homework on Dart, skipping Sanders’ workout sent the wrong message, and history shows it could signal lack of interest.

Sanders isn’t a flawless prospect—his arm talent is average—but he’s clutch and carries an undeniable presence under pressure. Still, unless the Steelers bring him in for a private visit, they may have missed their shot to fully assess him as a top pick.

In hindsight, this situation was entirely avoidable. The team could’ve met Dart on another day and still scouted Sanders in person. Now, a simple scheduling mistake might steer them toward the wrong quarterback in a pivotal draft year.
